Wild rice is a good source of fiber, a great source of protein and a low glycemic food. This nutritional grain is a powerhouse of antioxidants and nutrition and it’s not actually a rice!
In this episode, Sarah talks with John Langdon co-owner of Oregon Wild Rice all about the wild rice, the farm to table movement and more! This is a great episode to learn more about where our food comes from and about the farming process of wild rice.
Wild Rice is Not Actually Rice
Are you surprised that wild rice is not actually a rice? It’s true! Despite its name, wild rice is actually the grain of four different species of grass.
Although not typically grown in Oregon, John and his brother noticed that they had the perfect growing conditions for wild rice and so they planted some not sure how the outcome would be….and then were surprised when their wild rice turned out to be a superior product in both taste and looks.
Now John and his team are on a mission to educate others about the positive benefits of wild rice!
Wild Rice is a Plant Protein
It’s true! Wild rice has double the amount of protein of regular rice making it the perfect grain for a plant based diet. It is also full of fiber and is a low glycemic food.
Wild rice has an earthy nutty flavor and while that is great on its own, it is also a great base for using in your favorite plant based dishes. Check out these on our site that are made with Oregon Wild Rice:
Farm to Table and Supporting Your Local Farmers
John had a great perspective on how farmers (like his family) really desire to have a connection to consumers. They do this in a variety of ways such as being present at farm stands in the summer and connecting with local retails to shelve their product.
The pandemic has brought consumers back to their kitchens to cook together – so much so – that Oregon Wild Rice was filled with gratitude that they were able to supply their retailers with a superior product when store shelves went empty in March 2020.
John and his team are supportive of Oregon Ag and their enthusiasm about spreading the word for both wild rice and more is so refreshing!
Now is the time to discover a real and tangible connection to the food we consume and we are happy to support and spread the word about Oregon Wild Rice!
